Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket are the first ones in India to implant a Bluetooth enabled pacemaker. This new technology can allow remote monitoring of the patient and has proven in higher survival rates.

This advanced Bluetooth enabled pacemaker technology helps in giving access to vital information anytime and anywhere. The pacemaker was fitted on the patient, Ram Kali Devi, a resident of Delhi, who was admitted to the hospital after complaining of hypertension and fainting episodes. Her coronary angiography showed single vessel disease and she underwent dual chamber with implantation permanent pacemaker in the same sitting.

Cardiologist, Dr. Viveka Kumar, Principal Director & Chief of Cath Labs (Pan Max), Cardiac Sciences of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, said that the reason they decided to place a Bluetooth enabled pacemaker because the patient due to her age and health condition, wouldn’t have come for physical follow-ups.

The Blue Synctechnology allows tablet-based programming with app-based remote monitoring. Also, being so technologically advanced, its battery can last for 14 years. It was thus the perfect fit for the patient who are already going through troubled times. They wanted that the patient can stay at her home comfortably, without any botheration. The hospital informed that they opted for this novel pacemaker as it permits remote monitoring resulting in higher survival rates, reduced visits to the hospital, and reduced length of stay in the hospital. Patients can just use their smartphones to transfer heart device data via the app, replace the bedside monitor and can also view & select pacemaker data that includes model name and battery longevity.

The Bluetooth Low Energy is designed to lessen battery drain of this first-ever FDA approved pacemaker. The automatic notifications also keep patients informed regarding the pulse transmission status. Traditional pacemakers face a lot of issues and the patient had to frequently visit the doctor for getting it checked. Bluetooth enabled pacemakers can bring a whole new world to the doctors and patients. They provide quick detecting and reduce cardiac arrhythmia thus offering patients the highest standard of medical care. With these pacemakers, the follow-up time is fast, fewer hospital visits and improved connectivity and support. It allows doctors with the option to control max atrioventricular interval as notifications can also be programmed and observed by the clinicians only such as AT/AF burden notifications, rapid heartbeat episodes and lead impedance.

This Bluetooth pacemaker for the very first time is enabled to automatically and securely communicate with smartphones and tablets. Because of its High-Density Integrated Circuit, it can reduce the current drain, increasing longevity and is also upgradeable throughout the lifetime of the device.

The implementation of this unique technology can particularly well-suit the Indian market as recent studies showed that approximately 503 million Indians use a smartphone and 90 percent of Internet data usage is only on smartphones. India Ranks amongst the top five for health-care related searches. Patient monitoring, even outside the home, helps in delivering the quality of care and notifications to help patients stay connected.
